THE WORK
The face is more than a likeness.
It can become a territory where inner states surface - where emotion, memory, pressure and identity leave physical traces.
The Face Within is a series of drawings that explore this territory through distortion, tension, concealment and fragmentation. The faces move between recognition and dissolution, sometimes intimate, sometimes unsettling, sometimes almost unfamiliar.
Working primarily with charcoal, I build and erase the image repeatedly, allowing marks, shadows and traces of the process to remain visible.
The drawings are not intended as portraits of particular people, but as encounters with states of being that can exist beneath the surface.
Together, the works form a psychological passage - from the earliest expressions of vulnerability to fear, anger, confinement and the struggle to remain visible.
MEY TAL
Mey Tal is an artist and designer whose practice explores emotional and psychological states through the human face and body. With more than twenty years of experience in design, Tal approaches drawing through an understanding of space, structure, tension and form.
In 2022, following a life-changing experience, Tal began working intensively with charcoal. This developed into a body of work tracing an emotional passage through birth, dissociation, anguish, rage, fear and overwhelm.
The face has become a central territory - not simply as portraiture, but as a surface where inner states become physically visible. Through distortion, pressure, concealment and fragmentation, Tal explores the fragile boundary between recognition and dissolution.
